Since 2015, BTF Humla has been providing portable solar lights to areas without electricity. The success of this led to a bigger project to electrify four villages in Humla, Nepal: Buraunse, Bargaun, Torpa, and Nimatang. This was possible with help from partners like Barefoot College, Women Light the World, the New Zealand Embassy in India, ITEC, and SGP/GEF/UNDP, Simkot Rural municipality.
Introduction to Solar Mama
Before starting the solar project, BTF Humla selected women from each target village to become “Solar Mamas.” These women went to the Barefoot College in India for six months of training in solar electrical systems. After completing their training, the Solar Mamas could fix small issues with solar systems. This set the stage for the main project in four villages: Buraunse, Bargaun, Torpa, and Nimatang.
Achievements and Impact
- Electrification of Villages: The project brought electricity to nearly 265 households in the four villages.
- Training Solar Mamas: Local women were trained to become Solar Mamas, enabling them to fix small solar system problems and ensure sustainability.
- Sustainable Impact: The solar electrification has been running well, greatly improving the quality of life in these villages by providing reliable and sustainable energy.
Future Plans
BTF Humla plans to expand this successful project to more villages in the Dolpo and Humla regions. They aim to bring sustainable energy solutions and train more Solar Mamas to ensure long-term benefits.
