In 2020, BTF Humla initiated a swing training program for locals from the Nyin Valley and Raya village to preserve their cultural heritage and provide opportunities for additional income generation. This training, held in Simikot, focused on teaching participants the skills of cutting and sewing traditional clothing, as well as contemporary designs such as COVID-19 masks, reusable sanitary pads, local material bags, and other garments.
During the training sessions, experienced local head trainers, each with over three decades of tailoring expertise, were employed to impart their knowledge. To enhance the learning process, modern sewing machines were distributed to all trainees and trainers. This initiative successfully produced items that were sold and donated both in Kathmandu and Humla. Notably, masks and sanitary pads were donated to Humla Hospital and various villages near the BTF Humla office.
The training program is ongoing, with future plans to continue preserving traditional clothing techniques while commercializing local products for the broader market. Additionally, BTF Humla aims to extend its efforts by preparing sanitary pads specifically for school girls and women in Humla, addressing an essential need and contributing to the well-being of the community.
